“My girls have really bonded with Sonia. Thank you for taking care of us."

- Mia (Mountain View)

Growing up in San Francisco, Sonia is personally aware of the pressure that Bay Area students feel. Working with a tutor herself when she was in high school, she  benefited from having focused attention and wishes to pass that on to the students she works with now. She believes that first and foremost, students are successful when they have an empathic ally in their scholastic development. She hopes to work with them through challenges so they can gain more confidence in their abilities.

Sonia graduated with a degree in Conservation Biology with a minor in Comparative Literature from UC Davis. She worked as a cartographer at Save the Redwoods League, creating maps of the redwood range as well as synthesizing data into reports that were easy to interpret for the public. Her journey to tutoring started as a volunteer at a school in the Mission district of San Francisco, assisting eighth graders on their applications to the independent schools of San Francisco. After helping multiple students achieve admission into their top schools, she realized how much she enjoys encouraging students' writing to share their individual stories in their own voices. She gets excited by seeing students begin to gain confidence and feel empowered.

When Sonia is not working with the redwoods, she works part time as a birth and postpartum doula, assisting new families to adjust to this new phase of life. She is an avid reader, participating in a book club as well as a cookbook club and movie club. Her favorite thing to do in her freetime is to swim in the San Francisco Bay.
